Emphysema

Emphysema is an irreversible chronic lung disease in which alveoli become greatly distented and loose their elasticity. Air tends not to be expelled during expiration resulting in a very laboured breathing. Causes include smoking or long-term dust inhalation. On chest radiographs emphysema is characterised by increased chest dimensions, flattened diaphragm obscuring costophrenic angles and an elongated heart shadow. Lung fields appear very radiolucent.

John Little and Hayley Powell came first and second respectively in the Higher Education Aacdemy (HEA) 2009 national essay competition.
